Interior Styling and Styling to Camera

Add a natural touch with fresh flowers.

“Interior styling is the art of creating visually appealing spaces. This can include arranging furniture, adding decor, and selecting colours and textures to create a cohesive design scheme. Interior stylists often work on projects such as photoshoots, home staging, and events."
Interior Style Hunter, Jan 223.

Almost all the interiors I photograph have been styled to some degree, so photography begins in a room set that is already fully accessorized.

But what is styling to camera?

Once we decide on the angle we are going to shoot and the camera is in position I take the first shot, then we analise it on a larger screen, this being a laptop or Ipad.
Even though the room is fully styled, the furniture or accessories might not be correctly placed in relation to each other or to the camera’s position, for example two accessories could now look like they are directly behind each other or some items of furniture are touching, thus needing to create some dead space (a gap) between them.
These minuscule changes, and sometimes they really are just millimeters to the right or to the left, do make all the difference and will result in a more aesthetically pleasing image, so it is worth taking the time to do it.

Each time we make an adjustment I take a new shot and analise it again, and again until we are all happy with the final position of all the items that make our photograph.

The two examples below show how styling to camera was performed at a recent photoshoot and the outcome.
